Abstract:

The current water management in our country is based on a reviled model that depends almost exclusively on large concrete hydraulic constructions, from the named gray infrastructure. This way of water management has caused significant environmental damage and has proved inefficient to face both intense droughts and torrential rains typical of our climate. On the other hand, gray infrastructure is characterized by its poor adaptability to the important social, environmental and even climatic changes that have occurred in our country in recent decades. The most advanced countries in water management are looking to apply a new paradigm, the Integrated Water Management (IWM), in which water, soil and associated resources are managed jointly, seeking a balance between socioeconomic and environmental benefits. In this changing context, there is a growing interest in the so-called nature-based solutions, where green infrastructures come into play, understood as the use of natural processes, soil and vegetation as tools to achieve a better water management. The historical water management systems existing in Sierra Nevada since the Andalusian period are an example of efficient management. This water management system complies with the precepts of the GIA and is based on the use of green infrastructure. This has been recently demonstrated by a good part of the research team that integrates this proposal. This system is based on an extensive network of irrigation ditches, managed by irrigation communities and shepherds, which in the higher areas allow the infiltration of water generated during the thawing season. This practice, known as «careo», delays the outflow of water from the mountain, by taking advantage of the reduced speed of groundwater circulation through the aquiferous materials, which have been exposed on the surface as a result of the deglaciation of the Sierra Nevada.

Where this ancestral groundwater recharge system is carried out, the flow of springs and rivers downstream of the irrigation ditches increases during dry periods. To the water infiltrated by the irrigation ditches must be added the irrigation returns from traditional irrigated areas. Downstream of the irrigation ditches and the historical irrigation areas, biodiversity increases, allowing the existence of lush riparian forests and species that would not exist if these wet conditions had not been created. The result of this long co-evolutionary process consists in cultural landscapes of enormous value and gives rise to numerous ecosystem services. The project aims to improve scientific knowledge of these ancestral water management systems, as they are a living example of adaptation to climate change and resilience. To achieve this objective, an interdisciplinary research and working team has been formed, with experts in hydrogeology, hydrology, agronomy, archaeology and geography. Most of them have previous experience in this field and have collaborated before. From there, a dialogue of knowledge will be established between the Academy and Local Ecological Knowledge and communal governance systems aiming to achieve more efficient, sustainable, integrated and respectful forms of water management.

[36

post-1725","page","type-page","status-publish","category-proyectos","entry
["GET
