The location
The gala dinner of the Conference will take place in a unique place in the city of Granada: the Hotel Palace of Santa Paula (Autograph Collection – Marriot) located at Gran Vía de Colón, 31. Situated in the heart of the Nasrid city, this five-star hotel fits in perfectly with the Conference topic, Reflections of the past in the present and future, while providing examples of the linguistic landscape of Granada.
Brief history
The present hotel is located in the Renaissance convent of Hieronymite nuns dedicated to Saint Paula. Founded on August 29th, 1531 on the site of a neighboring Moorish house, still preserved today, whose courtyard can be entered by guests, a monastery was erected that will last in its entirety until the construction of the Gran Vía de Colón, in 1900. The nuns managed the reconstruction of the expropriated part until they abandoned the convent in 1977, after 446 years living there. At the beginning of the 21st century, the space was restored and converted into a hotel.
The cloister
Space for meditation and connection with nature, it will be the meeting place for all of us, as we wait to enjoy our dinner. Built around a fountain, it consists of two heights of columns with capitals typical of Granada and the period, still preserving today, in the upper part, the accesses to the nuns’ cells. Completely restored, the cobblestone floor preserves slabs that record the lives of people linked to the building, this being an example of the oldest linguistic landscape of the city.
The chapel
Originally from the monastery, it is witness to frescoes that have survived to this day. It will be the space that will bring us together and where we will enjoy the Conference dinner.
