This has justified the development of a long-term project aimed at systematically addressing the archaeological site. The project integrates historical and archaeological research, physical and administrative protection of the site, the consolidation of exposed structures, and the social and scientific dissemination of the results, with the ultimate goal of reclaiming a once-forgotten space for the community.

Through a research agreement between the Vera Town Council (Almería), the project’s promoter, and the University of Granada, the project is currently being carried out by the PRINMA research group (HUM-1035). The scientific directors are Moisés Alonso Valladares and Alberto García Porras.

Part of the Bayra archaeological team

In total, excavations are planned in eight archaeological areas distributed throughout the site. The first corresponds to the alcázar, located at the highest point of the hill, which likely served as the administrative center of medieval Bayra and housed its most important buildings. The second area of interest includes a group of structures located on the northeastern slope, presumably forming one of the city gates. On this same slope, beneath the city wall, lies the third sector of intervention, where various domestic and craft-related structures have been identified.

The remaining areas to be excavated correspond to residential buildings that were occupied until the earthquake struck, allowing researchers to gain a better understanding of daily life in 16th-century Vera and the appearance of its houses. Planned excavations will focus on the northern and eastern slopes of the site and include two additional areas closer to the current road. Finally, near the hermitage-cistern, a section of the city wall buried by landslides will be excavated and restored.

All these interventions will be accompanied by the scientific and technical consolidation of the uncovered structures. At the same time, a public outreach program has been launched, including guided tours, educational workshops, lectures, and exhibitions to disseminate the project’s findings.

(Text by M.
